2008 NATIONAL FAMILY APPRECIATION MONTH

What is the International Order of the Golden Rule (OGR)?
OGR is one of the world’s largest professional associations of local, family owned Golden Rule funeral homes whose members are dedicated to offering reliability, fair pricing, and dignified caring service to families.

WHAT IS NATIONAL FAMILY APPRECIATION MONTH (NFAM)…
The objective of this program is to heighten awareness of the importance of family and to help strengthen family relations.

WHAT IS THE NFAM STUDENT WRITING CONTEST?
This contest is run through your local Golden Rule Funeral Home – Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home. It is a STUDENT WRITING CONTEST FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS in communities across the U.S. and Canada.
Local prizes awarded by Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home will be an IPOD for first place and $50 Gift Certificates to Best Buy for 2 runner-ups.
THE NATIONAL PRIZE AWARDED IS A $5,000 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP, funded by Aurora Casket Company.
• Eligibility: high school seniors attending public, private or parochial schools.
• Students submit an essay on the theme of “family appreciation” (500-1,000 words). Consideration to be given for content/lessons learned, sincerity, emotional pull, creativity, structure and grammar.
• Students compete at the local and national level; local prizes will be an IPOD for first place and $50 gift certificate to Best Buy for 2 runner ups; national prize will award a $5,000 college scholarship.
• Student essays will be due at the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home by November 14, 2008.
• Local contests to be judged by community leaders and professionals.
• Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home will send their first-place winning essay to OGR for judging by December 5, 2008.
• Scholarship winner will be announced in late - January 2009.
• The winning student and submitting funeral home will be recognized at the association’s 2009 annual conference in Nashville. The winning entry will be published in OGR’s magazine, “The Independent”. OGR will fund the expenses for the student and two parents/guardians to attend the conference. The scholarship will be redeemed following verification of college enrollment.
