Catharine Ferguson

CUYAHOGA FALLS-Catharine C. Ferguson (Katie), age 87, died October 1, 2014 after a long illness. She was born in Massillon on June 23, 1927 to Harry and Irene Poth. Katie was a graduate of Kent State University. She taught elementary at Harvey School in Massillon her first year. Katie married Robert Ferguson in 1949, and taught at C. F. Newberry, as well as Lincoln Elementary for 34 years. She received "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" at Lincoln.
Katie and Robert enjoyed trips to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand. They vacationed at their home on Middle Bass Island and traveled to New Smyrna Beach for 52 years. They enjoyed entertaining, family, friends, and colleagues from University of Akron. Katie and Robert did Festival of Trees for 24 years to help Akron Children's Hospital. Katie's hobbies were collecting and reading books, cooking and baking desserts for her family, friends, and the Catholic Church, St. Joseph's. She supported a number of community organizations.
Preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Robert Ferguson in 2007 and brother, James and wife, Mary Alice Poth. She is survived by her sister, Sally (Jim) Smith; nephews and godsons, Tim Pizzino and his friend (Betsy) and Jeff Poth and his wife (Marie); special friends, Sondra Esporite, Del Dager, Mary Cramer, and Joanne Kitchin; Katie's companion dog, "Kasie", was a joy to her; nieces Pam (Bill) Boyd, Jamie (Mark) Crowe; great-nieces, Rachelle (Andy) Kujawa, Amanda (Ted) Rhodes; great-nephews, Kyle Pizzino, Patrick (Lorisa) Pizzino, Danny Boyd, David Boyd; great-great-nephews, Tyler Kujawa, Anthony, Chase, Jaxon Pizzino; great-great-niece, Aria Kujawa.
Following Katie's wishes, cremation has occurred. A "Celebration Mass" will be held on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph's Parish at Second St. and Sackett Ave. in Cuyahoga Falls, Father Jared Orndorff will be Celebrant. Services entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home and Crematory, 330-928-2147.
