Arthur Tarr

January 3, 1943 — July 2, 2021

Arthur Tarr

Two years and Archie had not had a MGD or a Marlboro, hard to believe, right! He passed away peacefully Friday, July 2, 2021, and probably started an immediate poker game with Doug, Yaynor, Dan and Colleen, maybe even with Sue’s dad and grandma.  We hope his cards are dealt as all winners.

He was born in Steubenville, January 3, 1943, and preceded in death by his parents Sophia V. (Wierzbicka) Tarr and Andrew V. Tarr.  He graduated from Steubenville Central Catholic HS in 1960 and attended Ohio University in Athens Ohio and graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Arts.

The salesman in him kicked in after college and worked for Litton McBee where a lot of his business was done on the golf course, one of his favorite past times.  He then changed from sales to co-owning two bars in Cuyahoga Falls, OH, The Carousel on State Rd. and then later the Oakwood Bar and Grille on Oakwood.  As an avid sports lover, he sponsored many baseball, softball and basketball teams for both kids and adults.

He loved to play basketball and played in high school and college and coached CYO at St. Joseph Catholic School and Walsh Jesuit High School.

He then returned to sales and sold sporting goods equipment to local high schools and colleges with both Dumont Sporting Goods in Canton, OH and Ritchie’s Sporting Goods in Tallmadge, OH.

He then moved to selling meat to area restaurants, bars and organizations, this was a challenge at first but he loved working with the chefs and owners, offering suggestions, how to cut meat, serving and pricing items on their menus. He started this journey with Blue Ribbon Meats in Cleveland, OH and finished out his career with Canton Hotel and Restaurant Supply in Canton, OH.  Thank you, Chris for your special deliveries and all your support!

He was a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1923 in Cuyahoga Falls, OH.  He filled all the chairs before becoming the youngest Exalted Ruler in 1983-84.  He also served as a trustee, lodge manager, chef, and kitchen manager.  He also held positions of Grand Auditor for the District and was a ritual coach.  He helped raise funds for the lodge and their charities through the P.E.R. committee, reverse raffles, card parties, golf outings and bus trips.  He also brought local singers to the lodge such as Peggy Coyle and Ernestine with their bands back in the day.

He was also a member of the Sons of American Legion Unit 281 Cuyahoga Falls Ohio. Their steak dinners were Archie’s product.   He supported Central Catholic Alumni events and he supported The Falls Cancer events with Sue. He was also patron of The Porthouse Theatre at Kent State.

Archie loved many things such as M&Ms, short bread cookies, pizza from Steubenville’s Di Carlos Pizza (now in Cuyahoga Falls), root beer, coney dogs, pasta with red sauce with a glass of red wine, crossword puzzles, Sudoku and MGD beer!

He loved watching all sports, Ohio State Basketball, the Indians, and the Browns vs Steeler games to name a few.  Also going to Myrtle Beach and the Casino in Seneca, NY with Sue.  He loved going to Las Vegas with family and friends and playing cards and craps.

And he loved watching his granddaughter grow up.

He is survived by his wife, Susan L. (Dansberg) Tarr; son, Shawn P. Tarr of Akron, OH; daughter, Beth A. McGarry (Michael) and granddaughter, Samantha D. McGarry of Tallmadge, OH; Patricia A Tarr of Racine, OH; and cousins in Ohio, California and Montana. He married Sue in 2002, in Delray Beach, FL and added the Dansberg’s, Jones’, Yacapraros and the Karabanous to his family.

A service will be held at the Elks Lodge at 2555 State Rd. in Cuyahoga Falls, OH on Friday, July 23, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. with an Elks Memorial Service starting at 6:30 p.m. and then a toast to celebrate his life immediately after.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made the Elks #1923 kitchen fund, or the Falls Cancer Club, PO Box 3244, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44222.  This clubs helps local families in so many ways.

Special thank you to Grace Hospice of Uniontown, OH.  Their group was so caring and supportive.

Arrangements entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home and Crematory, 330-928-2147.
