Bob Summy

CUYAHOGA FALLS - Bob Summy, age 82, husband, father, educator, writer, animal lover and grandpa, passed away June 18, 2005 after a valiant battle with C. Difficle Colitis.
Robert Clark Summy was born in Akron on May 8, 1923 to A. Frank and Helen Margaret (Shanaberger) Summy. Growing up and attending schools in Cuyahoga Falls and Akron, he graduated "Class of 1941" from Buchtel High School. College at the University of Akron was interrupted during WWII while he served in the US Army during the occupation of Manila. After the war, he graduated with a B.A. in Education. Later he returned to school and received a Masters in Education in 1962.
After graduation in 1949, he began his teaching career in Lorain, Ohio. There, he discovered his love of teaching and his wife Flo, a colleague at that first school. In 1952, they moved to Cuyahoga Falls where Bob taught at Richardson, Crawford and Bode. Active in CFEA, he was known for his comedic writing skills which poked fun at colleagues and administrators.
As a band parent, he was active in IMPS and a frequent chaperone. In 1966 he was "The Voice of the Tiger Band".
After over thirty years as an educator, he retired. During his retirement, he enjoyed being a volunteer guide at Stan Hywet, bowling, bridge playing, reading and being a proud Grandpa. He never stopped his love of learning and furthered his education by attending Elder Hostel with his wife and close friends.
He was a member of the Wesley Class at First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls, the Stan Hywet Guild, Phi Sigma Kappa, OEA and NEA.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Florence E. (Meteer); children, Julie of Akron, Brent of Cuyahoga Falls and Jan (Bryan) Wallis of Sacramento, CA. Bob felt one of his greatest achievements was being grandfather to three boys whom he adored, Neil and Alex Taylor of Springfield Township and Joey Wallis of Sacramento, CA.
