Cuyahoga Falls - Carl F. Miller, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 19, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. Carl was born on October 2, 1921, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio over the restaurant his family owned and operated on Front Street. Preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Carl F. Miller, Sr. and his sister, Shirley Rothrock, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Dorothy (nee Truitt), three daughters Elaine (Myron) Gray, of Munroe Falls, Carla (Tommy) Frazier, of Elk Grove, CA, and Anne (Richard) Stegman, of Greensburg, PA. Survived also by grandchildren, Julie (Richard) Gulley, of Akron, Debbie (Robert) Lisic of Stow, Morgan Frazier of Russellville, AR, Christiana, Patricia, and Louisa Stegman of Greensburg, PA and great-grandchildren Thomas Gulley and Jacob and Rachel Lisic.
Carl was a great American who valiantly fought for his country in World War II, in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force achieving the rank of Captain. Carl was seriously wounded in the war but courageously survived, returning home via a prisoner of war exchange in March 1945, spending several more years in Army hospitals. He was awarded a Purple Heart. Following military service, Carl was a U.S. Mail Carrier in Cuyahoga Falls for 19 years. Carl started a new career with Rohner Distributors in 1967 and was their top salesman for many years before retiring after 25 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ. He was a Past Commander of the Charles Faust Post 281 of the American Legion. Carl played and marched in the drum and bugle corps for many years and served as President and was a member of the Military Officers Association.
Carl enjoyed his hobby of HO trains, building and designing many different train layouts much to the delight of his grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good round of golf with family and friends. He never met a stranger and was well-liked by all. Carl was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity United Church of Christ, 915 North Main St., Akron, with Rev. David Kiewit and Myron Gray officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. Military Honors by American Legion, Charles Faust Post 281. The family suggests memorials be made to the Brecksville Veterans Hospital C/O American Legion Charles Faust Post 281, 1601 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221 in his memory.
