Hans Warmenhoven

Hans Warmenhoven passed away peacefully on 6 June 2025, at the age of 99, with his family by his side. He was born in Voorburg, the Netherlands, on 15 July 1925, and lived his adult life in the Akron, Ohio area. He worked as an accountant his entire career.

Hans is survived by daughter Monica Emery, daughter Claudia Folt and her husband Robert Folt, son Michael Warmenhoven and his wife Tonya Warmenhoven, daughter Rosemary Warmenhoven and her husband Matthew Painter, son David Warmenhoven and his wife Jennifer Warmenhoven, daughter Gabriella Matus and her husband Lance Matus. Hans is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Jason, David, Brian, Sarah, Shawn, Hana, Erik, Marisa, Allison, Kade and Cashel; as well as seven great-grandchildren: Beckett, Arden, Graham, Everett, Eloise, Thomas and Celine; they all knew him as ‘Opa’. Hans was preceded in death by Geesje Prins Warmenhoven, his beloved wife of 52 years, and by son-in-law Thomas Emery.

Hans and Geesje moved from the Netherlands to Akron in 1953, and began a long and devoted relationship to each other and their children. Especially later in life, his children were his greatest joy.

Hans was famous for his love of Dominoes and Rummikub, and could often be found playing a friendly game with his dear friends at Cardinal Retirement Village. He loved to sing for other residents and will be missed by many, as well as his lifelong friend, Linda Nye.

The family would like to acknowledge Hospice of Western Reserve for their loving care and guidance, and the staff of Cardinal Retirement Village, who lovingly cared for him for several years.

His family loved and admired him dearly, and will convene in July for a celebration of Hans’ life on what would have been his 100th birthday. In lieu of other tributes, Hans could be honored by donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
