Harriet Nehrer

Harriet Nehrer

Harriet Travis Nehrer passed through the doorway to another expression of life on August 19, 2006. She was surrounded by the loving prayers of family, special caregivers and Hospice Care Center at Ridgewood Road. Harriet lived for seven years with Parkinson's Disease, but never lost her love of life or her joyous laughter.

Born in East Liverpool, Ohio on April 23, 1929, Harriet grew up in Kent with her beloved brother George Travis, who preceded her in death in 1996. She graduated from Kent State University High School in 1947 and spent her freshman year at Thiel College in Greenville, PA. Harriet graduated from Kent State University with a degree in education in 1951, and went on to earn her Masters Degree in Special Education. Married to her college sweetheart, John Nehrer in 1951, Harriet first taught in the Cleveland Public Schools and later in the Cuyahoga Falls School system. Teaching was one of the many joys of her life. Harriet truly loved her students, and rejoiced in hearing of their accomplishments in their lives after graduation.

Harriet loved all children, and especially delighted in her ten grandchildren; Lauren, Rachel, Robert, Erin, Andrew, Zoe, Jenna, Johnny, Marissa and Jay. Never was she more happy than when she was surrounded by her whole family, laughing, eating good food and enjoying life to the fullest.

A member of Unity Church, Harriet drew great inspiration, comfort and peace from her worship there. The church taught her to love every minute of life, how to find joy in every day and to see the Christ in everyone she met. Harriet was a happy soul, and her love spread to everyone who knew her.

Harriet is survived by her husband of 55 years, John Nehrer, son John Nehrer Jr., daughter Lori Kassinger and husband John, and daughter Joy Wilson and husband Bryan.

Per Harriet's request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at Unity Chapel of Light, 503 Northwest Avenue, Tallmadge on Friday, August 25th at 3 pm.

In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation to a charity close to your heart is requested.
