James E. Thompson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025—poignantly, on the birthday of his late grandson, Austin James Thompson. He was 93 years old.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on February 20, 1932, Jim developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors and conservation. A proud graduate of East High School (Class of 1950), he went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Air Force.
In 1953, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Jean Averill. Their loving partnership spanned more than 72 years and was marked by a shared love of family, nature, and purposeful living. Together, they raised two sons, Jim and Scott, and built a life full of warmth, adventure, and enduring values.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Kent State University in 1957, Jim founded Thompson Associates, Inc. in 1963. Through his company, he specialized in the design and delivery of laminated wood structural roof systems—particularly for churches across the United States. His architectural vision and entrepreneurial spirit left a lasting mark on countless communities.
In 1972, Jim and Jean purchased a 133-acre tree farm in southern Ohio. Over the years, they planted more than 40,000 pine trees, driven by their deep commitment to environmental stewardship and their love of the land. This sanctuary became a cherished place for their family to connect with nature and one another, and a legacy of conservation passed down to future generations.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Geraldine Thompson; his sister, Nancy Deering; and his beloved grandson, Austin James Thompson.
He is survived by his wife, Jean (Averill) Thompson; his sons, Jim Thompson and Scott (Kim Mitzo) Thompson; and his granddaughters, Morgan and Bailey. He is also survived by his brother, Jack (Cynthia Sears) Thompson, and many other loving family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Northampton United Methodist Church, 852 West Bath Road, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223. Family and friends are invited to gather for a luncheon following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in Jim’s memory through A Living Tribute (www.alivingtribute.org)—a meaningful way to honor his lifelong love of the outdoors and dedication to land conservation.
