CUYAHOGA FALLS -Jay E. Phipps, 87, died October 24, 2004. Mr. Phipps was born in Smithfield, OH and had resided in Cuyahoga Falls since 1954. He had been councilman for 3 years and mayor for 5 years in Smithfield and enjoyed playing golf. He had been purchasing agent for 25 years at General Tire and Rubber, retiring from Gen Corp and was a Veteran of WW2 having served with the U. S. Navy aboard the Carrier Hornet in the South Pacific and a member of the First Christian Church of Cuyahoga Falls.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Romayne, sisters, Jean Hockenberry and Janet Jones and step-grandchild, Ronald Shaffer Jr. and is survived by his wife, Frances (Shaffer) Phipps; daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Carl Becker of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Robert, Jeffrey, Sarah and Michael Becker; great-grandchildren, Ashton and Ryan; step-children, Donald (Elaine) Shaffer and Ronald (Mary Ann) Shaffer; 6 step-grandchildren; 9 step-great-grandchildren; nephew, Jay Edward Jones and niece, Suzie Weldon.
Friends may call from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Wednesday in The Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home 1930 Front St. Cuyahoga Falls where a Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday, Rev. Michael Roberts officiating. Interment Northlawn Memorial Gardens.
