Mary Kathleen Maddex

Mary Kathleen Maddex, lovingly known as Kathy, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026, at the age of 78.

Kathy was a proud graduate of Firestone High School, Class of 1966, and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree from Ohio University, later completing her Master’s degree in Education in 1992. She dedicated much of her life to learning and helping others grow.

She began her professional career at Martin Marietta, Kennedy Space Center, where she worked from 1975 to 1988. She often fondly recalled her connection to astronaut Judy Resnik, a former classmate. After returning to Ohio, Kathy continued her commitment to education within the Akron Public Schools, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, and ultimately as a principal. She retired in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of care and leadership.

Kathy found great joy in traveling and especially treasured the many cruises she shared with her beloved husband of 56 years, Craig, who will miss her deeply.

She is also lovingly remembered by her two brothers, Robert (Diane) Heffern, Richard T. Heffern; sister-in-law, Linda Heffern, along with and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she held close to her heart.

In accordance with Kathy’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no formal services will be held. She will be laid to rest privately at the family plot in Cooperstown, Pennsylvania.
