Nelson Gorbach

CUYAHOGA FALLS- Nelson Francis Gorbach, also known as Sonny, passed away on January 13, 2024, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, at the age of 81. He was born on December 6, 1942, in Akron, Ohio. Sonny was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Nelson is survived by his sister, Marnelle Lucas, his nieces/nephews Ann Cronin (Alfred), Margaret Lucas (Scott Seppi), George Lucas, John Lucas (Tonya) and David Lucas (Fabienne), his son, Timothy Gorbach (Pamela), his granddaughters Abigail Castro (Mel) and Meghan Gorbach, son Mark Gorbach, and son Alan Gorbach (Brooke), his grandsons, Connor and Liam Gorbach. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clare Rita Gorbach (Tucker), his father, Nelson J Gorbach, and his mother, Marie C Gorbach (Harb).

Nelson's educational journey began at St. Vincent Primary School and continued at St. Vincent High School, where he graduated in 1960. He went on to pursue higher education at the University of Akron, College of Music, graduating in 1965.

Nelson's career was dedicated to his passion for music and mentoring young minds. In 1965, he became the first band director and head of the Fine Arts Department at Walsh Jesuit High School. Nelson's talent and dedication were evident during his first interview, leading to his immediate hiring at its' conclusion. He built the music program from the ground up and served in that role for an impressive 50 years until his retirement in June 2015. Nelson also took on the role of counselor at Walsh, where he cared deeply for each student he encountered. He provided guidance, support, and occasionally a not so gentle nudge in the right direction. Nelson always ended every concert by expressing his commitment to spending time playing music and getting to know the students. Throughout his tenure at Walsh Jesuit, Nelson taught and counseled thousands of young men and women, always hoping they learned as much from him as he did from them. He cherished them all.

A wake will be held in Nelson's honor on January 19, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Walsh Jesuit High School in the Chapel. There will be a private internment. A memorial mass will be held soon with details provided at that time.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Nelson's memory to Walsh High School. Contributions can be sent to the school, where they will be used to support the continuation of Nelson's legacy and the education of future generations.

Nelson Francis Gorbach, Sonny, will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His music, guidance, and warm presence touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on the Walsh Jesuit community and beyond. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
